Robert Ferro, the Cuban exile who hoarded more than 1,000 guns and grenades in his Upland home, was sentenced Monday to 5 1/2 years in prison.

In Riverside, U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips also fined Ferro $75,000 after he pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of firearms.

Ferro, who initially was charged with five federal weapons violations, said he was keeping the weapons for a Florida paramilitary group that planned to overthrow Cuban President Fidel Castro.

The group, Alpha 66, denied any connection to Ferro and said he was not a member of their organization. Federal, state and local authorities discovered the weapons when they raided Ferro’s home in April 2006.
