Seeing Los Angeles with kids’ eyes again

Some new parents get creative chronicling their diaper-changing experiences. Some create scrapbooks; others produce journals, videos or blogs.

But for Sabrina and Jody Weissler of Woodland Hills, parenthood gave them a good excuse to do something they’ve always wanted to do: podcast.

“We really liked the format, short and informal,” says the 29-year-old mom, who has been hosting L.A. With Kids. The podcast show features Weissler’s urban adventures with her now-2-year-old twins, Logan and Madison. Husband Jody -- a fifth-grade teacher -- is the producer.

Just wrapping up its 38th installment, the podcast has been running since January 2006. New shows air about once or twice a month, Weissler says, depending on how “active I have been with the kids.” About 1,000 people download the shows weekly, she says.

Past shows feature typical kid-friendly venues such as the museum, zoos and parks, but there are some surprise locations and outings that may be new to parents.

For example, one of Weissler’s favorite places is the Gardens of the World in Thousand Oaks, a little-known spot where families can bring a picnic and discover different garden styles, such as Japanese, French and English. Bonus: It’s free.

Overall, the 10- to 15-minute shows can give parents incentives to explore the area with their kids as well as practical information on stroller accessibility, shade and parking. Weissler is a friendly guide, although her voice can be uneven and singsongy at times.

“Part of the fun of being a parent is that you get to see the city with different eyes,” says the native Angeleno. “Lots of these places I’m going with the kids now I haven’t been to since I was a kid.”
