Two U.S. human rights activists were arrested after seeking the release of a prominent Pakistani lawyer detained under the country’s state of emergency, officials and a witness said.

Medea Benjamin and Tighe Barry were detained in the eastern city of Lahore, said Amir Sohail, joint secretary of the Punjab Union of Journalists, who was with the two Americans at the time. A police official said the two were likely to be deported.

In the northwestern city of Peshawar, meanwhile, a female suicide bomber who apparently aimed to attack a military post blew herself up near a Christian school, officials said, in what was believed to be Pakistan’s first case of a suicide attack by a woman.
