Immigration common sense

Re “In GOP, immigration is hot,” Dec. 5

The Times is digging up the ghost of Proposition 187 to try to bully California Republicans to get away from the issue of illegal immigration. Notice I say “illegal,” while your headline does not.

As a matter of fact, Proposition 187 was passed with a pretty good margin by an obvious coalition of not just cranky Republicans but Democrats and independents as well. It passed out of a common-sense recognition that the state needed to enforce regulations regarding eligibility for public services: proof of legal residency.

If The Times implies that there is something sinister about even discussing the repercussions of a porous border and an unceasing stream of uninvited new residents, I think that its readers deserve to hear a full support of this position. If this is not the case, then why sling mud at members of the GOP, right wing or not, who insist that the issue of illegal immigration be addressed?

In the years since the dreaded proposition was overturned, the problems that it attempted to resolve have multiplied, not gone away.
