Goldbergs who live in glass houses

Re “Triangulation comes full circle,” Opinion, Dec. 18
Jonah Goldberg’s all-encompassing fear that Hillary Clinton might get nominated or, God forbid, elected makes him tread paths that he should avoid. His column demeans her and her husband and claims that her “career is indisputably a product of her marriage.” You’d think that someone whose own career exists because of his mother’s -- Lucianne Goldberg -- would be wary of making accusations of nepotism. At least he ought to be more understanding of strong women driven by political ideology.

Wherever did Goldberg get the impression that Hillary Clinton is the dream of the liberals? Liberals like me haven’t counted her as their choice since Bill Clinton signed the welfare bill, trampled on the civil rights of nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee and started the rendition program of which President Bush has so happily and effectively taken advantage. And Hillary Clinton’s voting record isn’t liberal. She’s said repeatedly that she would continue the war in Iraq. It’s not the liberals she has lost; it’s the centrists she’s losing to other centrist candidates.

Goldberg gets to rub his hands in glee at the possible dimming of the Clinton legacy on one condition. He needs to connect the dots between George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan as he has between Hillary and Bill. Whether it’s rampant deficit spending, the weakening of government regulatory agencies or a unilateralist approach to foreign policy that favors saber-rattling over diplomacy, our current president has simply out-Reaganed Reagan, often with disastrous results. Clinton isn’t the only former president whose legacy is in jeopardy.
