Call on China to influence Sudan

Re “Embrace China,” Opinion, Opinion, Dec. 22

Although I agree that China is not a direct military threat, I think that all Americans, including our own government, must call on China to use its influence to tell Sudan to stop obstructing the United Nations peacekeeping force and attacking its own civilians.

History has taught us that genocide can only be stopped by the willingness of the most powerful in the international community. As the world prepares for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, an event that stands for peace and brotherhood, the Games are being hosted by a country facilitating the suffering and destruction in Darfur. Through its support of the government of Sudan, China is essentially allowing the Sudanese government to commit mass atrocities. China is the prime buyer of Sudan’s oil, its largest trade partner, and it also offers significant economic and military aid to Sudan. Moreover, China has protected Sudan diplomatically.

As citizens of this nation and members of the human race, we have the moral obligation to serve as a voice for the voiceless.
