Disclosure is outrageous

Re “Too much disclosure,” editorial, Dec. 20
Although we applaud your conclusion that the financial disclosure policy will do no good, we would like to clarify a few details. To begin with, the policy demanded is indeed outrageous.
No other law enforcement agency in the country is subjected to a similar policy. (Some federal agencies require credit checks, which are a far lower threshold of intrusion.) And, our objections are to this specific plan; we have submitted five separate alternative plans to the city of Los Angeles, which we believed offered safeguards to the city while protecting our members’ rights to privacy and financial security. That being said, we agree that our Police Commission should be able to distinguish between simply checking off a box on the consent decree and requiring disclosure because it’s truly useful.
