Hasbro recalls Easy-Bake ovens

Hasbro Inc. is recalling nearly 1 million Easy-Bake ovens because children may be burned or injured while playing with the toy.

The recall affects all ovens sold since May, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday. The latest version of the classic toy, which debuted in 1963, heats food like a toaster oven would, instead of by using a light bulb.

“Young children can insert their hands into the oven’s opening and get their hands or fingers caught, posing an entrapment and burn hazard,” the commission said.

Hasbro received 29 reports of children getting their hands or fingers caught, including five reports of burning, the commission said. Consumers can contact Hasbro to get a plastic piece that keeps children from putting their hands in the oven.

Gail Carvelli, a spokeswoman for Pawtucket, R.I.-based Hasbro, declined to say if any lawsuits had been filed. All five reports of burns were for children younger than 8, the minimum age recommended for the product, she said.
