Government critic freed from jail

Cuba released dissident lawyer Rene Gomez Manzano after holding him in jail for 18 months without trial.
The outspoken critic of Cuba’s communist government was arrested at his home July 22, 2005, on suspicion of planning to take part in a demonstration outside the French Embassy in Havana. Charges were never filed.
