‘The L.A. 8’ and the justice system

Re “Inside the 20-year fight of ‘the L.A. 8,’ ” Opinion, Feb. 6

Although I was deeply moved as I read Michel Shehadeh’s eloquent account of his 20-year struggle for the right to speak out on behalf of his countrymen in occupied Palestine, I also found myself reflecting on the long ordeal suffered by American taxpayers as a result of the incredible incompetence and malice of the federal prosecutors who stubbornly pursued this case despite repeated judicial rejection.

The ironic truth is that “the L.A. 8” courageously displayed more respect for the American justice system than the nation’s own Department of Justice.

I have followed the story of “the L.A. 8” since its beginning. Once again, the U.S. government has been overruled in no uncertain terms. And once again, the government makes threatening noises to reopen the case, using, once again, precious tax dollars to try a deportation case based on trumped-up charges and secret evidence.

To reopen this case in the face of public opposition to this travesty would be one more nail in the coffin of U.S. decline.
