Avalanches killed five people in Montana, Utah and Idaho, authorities said.

At the base of Mt. Baldy in Montana’s Big Belt Mountains, the bodies of two snowmobilers caught in an avalanche were found by searchers and removed by helicopter. A survivor traveled more than 15 miles back to a pickup truck at the trailhead, where he used a cellphone to call for help, authorities said.

In Utah, two snowmobilers died in separate avalanches. One was killed near Tower Mountain in the Uinta Mountains.

The other triggered a slide on Signal Peak in southwestern Utah, officials said.

In Idaho, authorities said a Utah man was killed in an avalanche near Palisade Peak.
