Re “Italy indicts CIA agents in kidnapping,” Feb. 17

Your front-page article implies that although few Americans would be subject to justice in an Italian court, Italy has demonstrated a far more moral and ethical stance than that exhibited by the Bush administration with its barbaric and sneaky policy of torture via “rendition.”

So our ally in the war on terrorism is indicting 26 American CIA agents as criminals because of controversial tactics referred to as “extraordinary renditions.” According to The Times, the case has proved embarrassing to Washington because it exposed this secretive and extrajudicial practice. Embarrassed? Poor choice of words. “Infuriated” would be a more accurate description of this betrayal by an ally. With friends like this in the war on terror, who needs enemies?
