Amid concern over an increase in guns being fired at officers, the Police Commission approved a special order Tuesday requiring sworn personnel and civilians to wear body armor during field operations.

Until now, officers were required to wear body armor when participating in “pre-planned tactical operations,” such as the storming of hostage situations.

The order extends the mandate to officers on patrol and civilians working crime scenes.
