Ventura County residents are being urged to conserve water through Thursday as local agencies scramble to replace supplies disrupted by a pipeline maintenance project.

“I cannot overemphasize the importance for people to step up and conserve water, particularly in the next four to five days. We don’t want to run our system dry,” said Eric Bergh, manager of resources at Calleguas Municipal Water District in Thousand Oaks.

The agency said residents should reduce the amount of water used on lawns, reschedule field irrigation until after 10 p.m., delay carwashes, wash only full loads of clothes and take shorter showers.

Conservation is encouraged from Oxnard east to the county line, including the communities of Camarillo, Moorpark, Lake Sherwood, the Las Posas and Santa Rosa valleys, Oak Park, Point Mugu, Port Hueneme, Simi Valley, Somis and Thousand Oaks. Residential and business customers may contact their local water suppliers to determine specific water-use restrictions in their areas.

On Sunday, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California will shut down its Jensen Water Treatment Plant in Granada Hills and a large feeder pipeline for two weeks to conduct routine winter maintenance.

Bergh said Calleguas officials are working to secure alternate water supplies and hope to have capacity back to normal as early as Thursday.

“It’s not that we don’t have enough water, the issue is water pumping capacity within the system,” he said.
