His kind of town

Re “Who wants a deep-dish Olympics?” Opinion, Jan. 18

Everyone knows California is the land of milk and honey (and honeys). But the reality is that Los Angeles isn’t the only game in town. L.A. owes a lot of its history to Chicago.

From film to trolley lines to contemporary growth patterns to the obsession with gyms, much of what L.A. does now, Chicago did first.

We do have beaches, and they’re beautiful ones, unlike those of most of the other large Great Lakes cities. Summer in Chicago isn’t that different from summer in L.A.: crowds of tourists, tanned people at the beach, haze, lots of Latin culture -- but without the earthquake risk.
