Senators consider response to Bush troop buildup plan
With Senate leaders still negotiating over resolutions on President Bush’s plan to boost troop levels in Iraq, debate on the contentious issue is not expected before next week.
“It’s a moving target,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who has called for adoption of a nonbinding resolution criticizing the plan.
Some Republicans, including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), are instead calling for legislation to set benchmarks to measure progress in Iraq.
Tuesday, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) introduced a bill calling for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.
And today, Sen. Russell D. Feingold (D-Wis.) is expected to introduce a measure that would cut off funds for U.S. troops in Iraq six months after it is passed.
