Council fails to override veto of Wal-Mart ban
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
On a 4-4 vote, the City Council this week failed to override Mayor Jerry Sanders’ veto of an ordinance banning Wal-Mart Supercenters.
The failure came when Councilwoman Donna Frye switched sides.
In June she voted in favor of the ordinance banning stores of more than 90,000 square feet that devote 10% of their space to food and other nontaxable items.
Frye said she was uneasy with a blanket ban and would work for a new law that would require tougher scrutiny of new superstores.
