Not a winner

I am uncertain how to express my disgust with Bill Dwyre’s column on July 7, “He’s glad he let it ride.”

I am sure that Dwyre intended his article to be a lighthearted piece about a man down on his luck who gambled and won a small fortune.

How many people will read this article and believe that all of their problems, financial and otherwise, can be solved by gambling? That winning will be the panacea that redeems and saves them?

How about an article on a couple I know whose marriage was destroyed by the wife’s gambling problem? Given the problems that this country has with gamblers, I would think that The Times would be more responsible than to promote gambling.
