What’s Zen is now

The Los Feliz hills are known for their exemplary Midcentury Modern homes, some designed by famed architects Richard Neutra and Wallace Neff. Stephan Basil Yacobian’s house -- with its pink granite floors and 1970s tract-style finishes -- was not among them.

But that was a year and a half ago. Today the three-level home is a sleek monument to the 1960s, featuring high ceilings and picture windows positioned to frame the unfettered views of downtown L.A., Hollywood and the Pacific.

“I wanted a minimalist, Zen-type quality,” said Yacobian, a writer and designer. “And I wanted it to feel like it’s always been that way.”

About this house: The remodeled home high in the hills north of Franklin Avenue is striking for its seamless blending of indoor and outdoor space and the sense of privacy the landscaping provides. The floor plan feels open, but individual rooms are painted and decorated distinctively.

The property -- accessed by a private driveway -- has lush, tropical foliage, notably bamboo. A patio off the kitchen is surrounded by Australian ferns and orchids, and the swimming-pool deck is covered with a retractable awning. An unobtrusive outdoor shower is next to the pool and Jacuzzi.

The interior offers a warm palette of pumpkin and sage green downstairs and blues and reds upstairs. The kitchen features Venetian plaster backsplashes and Kelly-green glass countertops.
