From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A minor explosion occurred in the basement of a UCLA building Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of about 200 employees, but no one was injured, officials said.

The blast was reported about 11:45 a.m. in the equipment room of a building housing the California NanoSystems Institute at the southeast end of the campus, said Brian Humphrey, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The institute conducts research in renewable energy, biotechnology sciences and other fields.

The explosion was caused by a burst pipe in an underground cooling system, UCLA officials said late Wednesday.

The blast did not spark a fire.
