Panel OKs expansion of hospital without review
To the chagrin of some community activists, the city Planning Commission on Thursday voted to allow Providence Holy Cross Medical Center to expand without doing a comprehensive environmental review.
The Mission Hills hospital plans to add enough space for 101 beds in addition to the 255 it already has, as well as a neonatal intensive care unit. Hospital officials said the additions were needed because of other hospital closures in the region.
Councilman Richard Alarcon, who represents the area, said he was disappointed by the decision. Although he backs the expansion, Alarcon said the environmental review was necessary.
