Heavy fire rocks site of refugee camp
A Lebanese soldier was killed by sniper fire from a Palestinian refugee camp Thursday, and heavy fighting erupted there this morning, witnesses and officials said.
The military and Islamic militants have been engaged in a standoff for nearly two weeks at the Nahr el Bared camp. Machine-gun and artillery fire rocked the site this morning, and smoke rose from buildings there.
About 50 armored carriers and tanks massed at the northern edge of the camp, according to an AP Television News crew at the scene. Military officials would not comment.
