Under its spell

I disagree with Charles McNulty about “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” in that I didn’t find the show “cute” [“Not Letter-Perfect,” May 29]. I find it the kind of musical theater that makes me want to come back for more. The script and improv are funny, the characters rich, the back stories very touching and the songs memorable.

My only disappointment was in the venue. What made “Spelling Bee” so wonderful in New York at Circle in the Square Theatre was the intimate setting, thrust stage and the raked seating. I sat near the rear of the theater yet still felt part of the action. The Wadsworth just isn’t a good fit for the show.

But don’t blame “Spelling Bee.” It’s fantastic.
