Public workers strike over pay

Public sector workers staged the biggest strike in post-apartheid South Africa, involving about 1 million people and closing schools, forcing hospital patients to return home and leaving only minimum staffing in prisons.
Tens of thousands of teachers, nurses and other civil servants took to the streets to press their demands for a 12% pay raise, saying they could not live on their salaries and the government’s 6% offer was insulting. A massive rally brought downtown Johannesburg to a standstill.
