Northrop Grumman Corp. won a $2.4-billion award from the U.S. Navy to build a new amphibious assault ship, a vessel that looks like a small aircraft carrier and can launch helicopters, Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and some types of fighter jets.

Work for the LHA-6 is part of a previously awarded contract and is expected to be completed by August 2012, the Defense Department said. Construction will take place primarily at Century City-based Northrop Grumman’s shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., the company said.
