Dance for a mere $10
In a move to increase its range of dance offerings and reach a wider audience, the Orange County Performing Arts Center will present a four-day, $10-a-ticket dance festival bringing 11 companies to the center in October.
“We wanted to make sure that there were no economic barriers and encourage the broadest and most diverse audiences possible,” OCPAC President Terrence Dwyer said this week. “We also wanted audiences to take chances and go outside whatever is their familiar territory in the dance world.”
Two separate programs on “The Center’s Fall for Dance” will each showcase five companies of diverse styles, including classical and contemporary ballet and modern and world dance. Additionally, Project Bandaloop, an experimental troupe from Oakland that combines dance and sport, will perform in the center’s Community Arts Plaza after each concert.
Most of the companies will be making their center debuts. Performing Oct. 11 and 12 will be the London bharata natyam ensemble Srishti -- Nina Rajarani Dance Creations; New York’s modern dance troupe Susan Marshall and Company; the Boston Ballet; the Seattle-based Pacific Northwest Ballet; and the South African hip-hop troupe Via Katlehong Dance.
The Oct. 12 and 13 lineup will include Oakland choreographer Charles Moulton with “The Ball Passing Project”; the Dutch National Ballet; the New York-based Martha Graham Dance Company; Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet from San Francisco; and the Philadelphia hip-hop troupe Rennie Harris Puremovement.
“This is a signature moment for the center,” Dwyer said. “We’ve been proud of our dance series for a long time. It’s an artistic strength of ours and at the heart of what we do.”
Further activities related to the series will be announced, Dwyer said.
