A new meningitis vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India Ltd. produced 20 times as many antibodies against the deadly bacterium as existing vaccines in a study of 600 toddlers in Mali and Gambia, the World Health Organization said Thursday.

The vaccine is expected to provide protection for decades rather than years, researchers said. At 40 cents a dose, it is expected to make dramatic inroads against the disease.
