War scenario lacks reality

Re “Al Qaeda’s new enemy,” Opinion, June 10

Regardless of the loss of life, the wasted money, the ruin of our reputation and the increase in terrorist activities that have followed President Bush’s incompetent prosecution and escalation of his war in Iraq, I have consistently yearned for a positive outcome. But Frederick W. Kagan’s article -- when read against the backdrop of escalating attacks, increasing death and decreasing security throughout Iraq -- is childishly naive. Waiting for Bush’s fantasy to become reality will cause more death, waste more money, further degrade our reputation and increase terrorism. We must respond to the facts, not the fantasy.

“In Iraq, [Al Qaeda’s] former Sunni allies are turning against it.” Great news! Who is it that brings us such glad tidings? It’s Kagan, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Gee, isn’t that the same bunch of ivory-tower warriors who helped get us into this mess in the first place?

Question: How much credence should we give to whatever they write? Answer: Absolutely none.
