Gunmen opened fire on government forces in Quetta, Pakistan, killing seven soldiers and two police officers.

The security forces were attacked as they drove toward military quarters, city Police Chief Rehmatullah Niazi said. Five soldiers were wounded.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher had met in Quetta with Jam Mohammed Yousuf, the top elected official in Baluchistan province, but left to return to Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, before the shooting, Niazi said.
