Hilton’s jail time sets an example

Share

Re “Hilton will do more time than most, analysis finds,” June 14

That we’re even debating whether Paris Hilton’s time behind bars is commensurate with the time that others spend is quite beneath The Times. The point here is that the judge was quite explicit in his instructions. Hilton was to serve her full sentence in jail, not at home or elsewhere. “Team Hilton” attempted to leverage her “celebrity” to mitigate this sentence to preserve her so-called mental health. The judge rightfully asserted his authority to counter this attempt by a celebrity-obsessed Sheriff’s Department.

And to assert that her 23 days, as opposed to the “mere” 20 her counterparts serve, escalates her from the 60th percentile to the 80th is a quite disingenuous “analytic” interpretation of both mathematic calculation and the contextual social considerations at large. Hilton is correctly being held as an example of what is permissible in our society.
