Marshall’s plan: opera with gags

Film director Garry Marshall (“Pretty Woman,” “The Princess Diaries”) had such a ball directing Offenbach’s “The Grand Duchess” for Los Angeles Opera in 2005, he’s going to do another opera. Marshall will direct Donizetti’s 1832 comedy “The Elixir of Love” for San Antonio Opera in January 2008, the Texas-based company has announced.

“I hope to make it quite funny,” Marshall said Friday. “Most of the characters are pretty well-defined: a rich girl, a poor guy from the other side of the tracks. This will be the first time I’m going to have a train go by. The smoke of the train makes everybody cough.”

San Antonio Opera founding director Mark Richter said the production would be borrowed from the New Orleans Opera.

Richter also has booked Los Angeles Opera general director and super-tenor Placido Domingo to sing in concert in June at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
