* Clear Channel Communications Inc. reached its first deal to use an electronic ratings system championed by Arbitron Inc. Clear Channel had long held out against using the system, which Arbitron calls the Portable People Meter, and its reversal could accelerate a wider adoption of the system in the radio industry.

* Microsoft Corp. didn’t infringe an Alcatel-Lucent computer-speech patent, a federal judge in San Diego ruled in a case that was scheduled for trial this month.

* German drug maker Bayer said it would cut 6,100 jobs, or 5.5% of its workforce, as it integrates Schering into its healthcare unit. More than half of the cuts will be in Europe, but about 1,000 positions will be eliminated in the United States.
