Drug-resistant TB

Re “TB type is lethal for HIV patients,” Feb. 26

Thank you for printing the article on extremely drugresistant tuberculosis, which represents a danger well beyond any previous form of this disease. Not only is it highly contagious, it has an extremely high mortality rate. If not immediately addressed with significant resources, it could become a greater threat than the still potential threat of avian flu. Its dangers will become more widely realized if the U.S. deploys troops to Africa for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. By then it may well be too late to deal with the problem.
