Relax, this hamstring stretch helps prevent injury

Share

A relaxing way to end a vigorous workout is to lie down on the floor and stretch the back of your legs. It has a very calming effect on your body and helps prevent injury. In this hamstring stretch, using a belt or a strap will make it more comfortable so you can stay in the position for a longer period of time, developing a deeper stretch. For correct positioning, keep the strap over the ball of your foot -- don’t allow it to slip over the arch of your foot.

1 Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Bring your right knee toward your chest with the sole of your foot facing the ceiling. Hook the strap around the ball of your foot and firmly hold the ends of the strap with each hand.

2 Slowly straighten your right leg as much as possible. Be sure to keep your head and the back of your pelvis on the floor. Hold this position, breathing evenly for 30 seconds. (If you feel tension in your neck or throat while holding this position, rest your head on a pillow.) Release your leg and repeat on the other side.
