Dumb Doras and Donalds rejoice

“Deal or No Deal”? Spare us. For those who remember the good old days of innuendo-laden game shows, haggling over suitcases is simply no fun. But Friday and Saturday, “The MisMatch Game,” a live-action takeoff on the ‘70s television show, will return to the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Renberg Theatre. Consider it a witty, ribald antidote to today’s dreary TV numbers games.

Hosted by nationally syndicated radio show host and author Dennis Hensley, these irreverent (and R-rated) events (held three or four times a year) are an adventure in Surrealist era-bending. The benefit joins retro icons such as Miss Piggy (Ted Biaselli), Shelley Winters (Madeline Long), Goldie Hawn (Kali Rocha, from “Meet the Fockers”), Ricardo Montalban (Felix Pire, “12 Monkeys”), Herve Villechaize (Danny Casillas) and Charles Nelson Reilly (“Fashion House’s” Tony Tripoli) and others to gamely tackle fill-in-the-blank queries riffing on today’s pop culture trivia. “I always write the questions right before the show,” Hensley says. “This time around, I’m thinking ‘American Idol,’ maybe Bush visiting Latin America. Britney Spears may just be too sad, but I’ll see if I can go there.”

The cast of Hensley’s “friends and friends of friends” definitely does go there (see previous R rating), much to the delight of sellout crowds. To date, the show has raised almost $28,000 for the center. “This started as something I did for a birthday party, and it was just too much fun to let go of it,” says Hensley, who considers these shows his “I’m back, world!” moment after a recent back surgery. “It’s wonderful to do this for a good cause, but honestly, we’d do it anyway.”
