San Diego’s Old Globe theater will open its 2007-08 season with the pre-Broadway world premiere of “A Catered Affair,” written by and featuring Harvey Fierstein, the theater announced Wednesday.
The production, which opens Sept. 30, will feature music and lyrics by Broadway newcomer John Bucchino and will be directed by John Doyle, a Tony winner for “Sweeney Todd.” Doyle also directed Los Angeles Opera’s recent production of Kurt Weill’s “Mahagonny.”
The family story, set in the Bronx in 1953, is based on the motion picture written by Gore Vidal and the original teleplay by Paddy Chayefsky. The show is expected to open on Broadway in spring 2008
