Ex-border patrol officer sentenced in bribery case

A former Customs and Border Protection officer was sentenced Monday to 57 months in prison after admitting he took more than $70,000 in bribes over two years to allow hundreds of illegal immigrants to pass through the San Ysidro border crossing.
Richard Elizalda, 58, of Chula Vista, was described by prosecutors as the leader of the smuggling ring. U.S. District Judge Larry A. Burns sentenced co-defendant Kenneth Web to 36 months in prison.
