$150,000 settlement in fatally botched surgery
Supervisors approved paying a $150,000 settlement to the parents of a 24-year-old man who died after a botched intestinal surgery at County-USC Medical Center.
Jaime Ortiz had his large intestine removed in September 2003 to help control his Crohn’s disease. Several days later, he was admitted to the emergency room, where medical staff did not immediately identify an internal surgical leak.
“This failure fell below the standard of care, and contributed to the death of Jaime Ortiz,” a county counsel memo stated.
