Calpine Corp., a power producer that has been operating under Chapter 11 protection since December 2005, said its first-quarter net loss narrowed to $459 million from $589 million a year earlier as its plants sold power at higher prices and reorganization costs declined.

The per-share net loss narrowed to 96 cents from $1.23 in the first quarter of 2006, the San Jose-based company said. Sales rose 19% to $1.6 billion.

Calpine shares rose 7 cents to $3.16.
