A fusion of Mozart and Monk, imagined anew

No, it’s not a misspelling. “Musaic” is described by Uri Caine and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as a combination of classical performances and “jazz and genre-bending re-imaginings.” Pianist Caine, despite his solid jazz credentials, has always had interests that roved freely across stylistic boundaries. His 16 albums as a leader include highly idiosyncratic excursions through the music of Mozart, Mahler, Wagner, Schuman, Bach, Beethoven and Thelonious Monk. This time out, as the composer in residence with the LACO, he has assembled a three-night festival of music in which “straight” performances by the orchestra are followed by Caine’s “re-imaginings” for his jazz sextet.

* Friday, 7:30 p.m.: Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra players perform selections by Mozart. 9:30 p.m.: Caine’s ensemble performs his re-imaginings of Mozart.

* Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra players perform new works by Caine, McNeely and Wolfgang. Second set: the Rova Saxophone Quartet.
