Making barbershops a one-stop shop for a shave, haircut and blood pressure check may be an effective way to help black men with hypertension get treatment, a new study shows.

After an eight-month barbershop-based intervention, men with high blood pressure were much more likely to start receiving treatment and to get their blood pressure under control than their peers given standard care, according to Dr. Paul L. Hess of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and colleagues.
