Deputy chief demoted over melee will retire
The highest-ranking command officer in MacArthur Park at the time of a May 1 melee has decided to retire rather than continue on home duty pending an investigation, Police Chief William J. Bratton told radio station KPCC-FM on Wednesday.
The decision to retire June 6 was made by Cayler “Lee” Carter Jr.
Bratton announced last week that Carter was being demoted from deputy chief to commander and was being reassigned from his job as command officer of Operations Central Bureau to his home.
Bratton also said about 50 civilians have complained of being mistreated by officers wielding batons and firing foam bullets.
