* at Boston 2-4, Detroit 1-2: Making a rare start in place of right fielder J.D. Drew (back), Eric Hinske slammed his chin into the ground making a spectacular, run-saving catch in the fifth inning, and hit a go-ahead homer two innings later to give the Red Sox a doubleheader sweep. In the opener, Julian Tavarez (2-4) gave up one run, four singles and four walks in seven innings. Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis drove in runs for the Red Sox.

* at Tampa Bay 8, Texas 6 (10 innings): Delmon Young’s second homer of the night, a two-run shot in the 10th inning at Kissimmee, Fla., helped the Devil Rays extend their winning streak to four games. Young, who drove in five runs, gave the Devil Rays a 5-3 lead against starter Kameron Loe with a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Sammy Sosa went one for six with three strikeouts for Texas, remaining three homers shy of becoming the fifth player to hit 600.

* at Chicago 4, New York 1: Jon Garland (3-2) limited the Yankees to a run and six hits over seven innings and Jermaine Dye homered and had four RBIs. The Yankees had two runners on in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but couldn’t score against Garland until Doug Mientkiewicz hit a two-out RBI double in the seventh.

* Kansas City 7, at Oakland 4: Scott Elarton (1-0) gave up four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings for his first victory since July 16. The right-hander made his second start of the season after sitting out the last 71 games last year and the first 36 this year because of shoulder surgery.

* at Cleveland 2, Minnesota 0: The Indians improved to 14-3 at home and are 5-0 this season against the Twins.

* Angels 7, at Seattle 3: Former Angel Jarrod Washburn gave up six runs after yielding 14 in his first seven starts.
