The United States, United Arab Emirates and Jordan airlifted military supplies to Beirut for a possible Lebanese army assault to crush Islamist militants barricaded in a Palestinian refugee camp.

Palestinian factions were scrambling to find a negotiated end to the siege at the Nahr el Bared camp, where thousands of civilians remain in the line of fire.

Defense Minister Elias Murr said he was leaving room for negotiations leading to the surrender of the Fatah al Islam fighters, but if that approach failed, “I leave it to the military command to do what is necessary.”
