OFF THE WALL

Looking back

* Florida Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis was having post-brawl regret after his shouting antics caused benches to clear Thursday night while he was pitching against Philadelphia. It wasn’t the shouting he regretted, only that his 1-month-old daughter was there, attending her first game. “Her first time seeing me pitch, and what do I do? Get in a fight,” Willis said. “Good example, right?”

Looking ahead

* Only 6 1/2 games separate the top four teams in the American League Central Division, but this week could change that. First-place Cleveland and second-place Detroit finish a three-game series today and will meet for four more beginning Thursday. Third-place Chicago and fourth-place Minnesota begin a three-game series Monday.

It’s a fact

* When New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter went hitless Saturday against the Angels, it ended a 19-game hitting streak and marked only the ninth time in his last 110 games he didn’t have a hit. Jeter, who passed Joe DiMaggio on the all-time hit list Wednesday, has 2,217 for his career. There are no Yankees in the 3,000-hit club. Lou Gehrig, with 2,721, is the franchise leader.

MINOR LEAGUE REPORT DODGERS IN THE MINORS

FRANCISCO FELIX, P

Inland Empire, Class A

Felix, 23, a right-hander from Mexico who was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2003, was recently promoted from Great Lakes, where he shared Dodgers minor league pitcher-of-the-month honors with teammate Clayton Kershaw. He was 1-1 with an 0.76 earned-run average there and did not give up an earned run in 20 1/3 innings as a reliever. He struck out 35 batters in 35 1/3 innings and held opponents to a .158 batting average. Things haven’t gone as smoothly with his new club. He has made two appearances for the 66ers, starting both, and is 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA in 10 1/3 innings. He has given up 11 hits and five walks but has nine strikeouts.

CHIN-LUNG HU, SS

Jacksonville, double A

Hu, 23, was batting .349 through Friday, fourth in the Southern League. That is nearly 100 points higher than his season average of .254 last year, and nearly 60 points higher than his four-year career average of .290. He hit his first home run this season Friday night but has only 23 in five-plus seasons. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent from Taiwan in 2003 and last year began opening eyes with his glove. His .981 fielding percentage led Southern League shortstops and included only 11 errors in 125 games. This year, he has made five errors in 37 games, but his .962 fielding percentage is still third among Southern League shortstops.
