Loss at Charter widens; sales rise

Charter Communications Inc., the cable company controlled by Paul Allen, said its third-quarter loss expanded to $407 million, or $1.10 a share, from $133 million, or 41 cents, a year earlier. Sales rose 9.9% to $1.53 billion.
Charter lost more than 40,000 basic cable subscribers during the period, compared with a gain of 5,000 forecast by Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst William Kidd in Los Angeles.
Shares of the St. Louis-based company fell 62 cents to $1.16.
