Everybody talks about the weather

Re “U.N. says it’s time to adapt to warming,” Nov. 17

The United Nations report emphasizes that global warming is “unequivocal” and that there is a high confidence that humans are responsible.

We have many scientific laws, but none pertaining to global warming. Therefore, computer climate models and predictions are not based on solid scientific evidence -- only on what some people think might happen.

From about 800 to 1300, we had the Medieval Warm Period, when the Earth was as hot or hotter than it is today. This was followed by the Little Ice Age from about 1550 to 1850. In 1300, fewer than 500 million people lived on Earth. In 1850, world population was more than 1 billion people. So how did twice as many people cause our Earth to cool? Humans are not responsible for our weather. Nature is.

It pleased me greatly to see this item on the front page. However, the statement that “global temperatures have risen about 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century” gives a false impression because it implies that we have about 100 years before it will increase another 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit. That is not accurate. The actual increase will be much greater than that because the rate of production of greenhouse gases is constantly increasing. The number of cars and trucks produced in 1901 is trivial compared with those produced in 2001. So I suggest that surprisingly strong weather of all kinds will continue to rapidly increase.
