‘Cancer survivor’ isn’t a good fit

Share

In response to your Nov. 12 My Turn column [“That’s Cancer Veteran, Conqueror or Activist to You”]: I completed breast cancer treatment last month and totally identified with Barbara Sills’ opposition to the term “cancer survivor.” “Survivor,” as Sills points out, is much too serious a term given today’s advances and treatment options.

I am young, 35, and feel that so many labels don’t fit my generation. After my recent follow-up appointment, I felt as though I’d “graduated.” I did the work, paid my dues and completed my goal.

And I don’t plan on earning any further degrees.
