Senate panel to vote on ownership

The Senate Commerce Committee plans to vote Tuesday on a bill that would force U.S. regulators to wait at least three months before changing media ownership rules.
The bill would prevent the Federal Communications Commission from voting Dec. 18 on possible media ownership rule changes that would benefit companies, including Chicago-based Tribune Co., that own newspapers and broadcast stations in the same market. Tribune owns both The Times and KTLA-TV Channel 5 in Los Angeles.
Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii) said this month that an FCC vote on a rule change before the end of the year would be a “serious mistake.” The bill would require 90 days of public comment before any FCC vote.
