In opposition to abortion foes

Re “Foes of abortion shift to states,” Nov. 23

The problem with defining a starting point for life is that it is actually an ongoing process. If life began at conception, then how can identical twins have completely separate minds? If there is a “person” present in the single cell created from sperm and egg, then how are two different people created when one cell becomes two separate identical cells? So it makes no sense to cave in to the demands of the religiously motivated to change the abortion laws. It also would behoove those who wish to turn their beliefs into law to have a look around. Given that there are more than 6 billion humans on the planet at the moment, it’s probably time to stop thinking of human reproduction as some sort of miracle -- it’s extremely commonplace.

OK, let’s outlaw abortion. Then, let’s outlaw women’s suffrage and ban walking upright. One phenomenon I’ve noticed that is harmful to children’s lives are jilted, paranoid, debt-ridden, jealous, psychopathic ex-husbands and boyfriends. Why don’t we ban them? War isn’t pro-life. Can we ban war? And once abortion is outlawed, wouldn’t the first 1.5 million Christian babies born have to be shipped to Iraq as compensation for Iraqis who have died because of the U.S.? Soccer moms will be chagrined (but biblically vindicated) when thousands of Jacobs and Skylers have to be ripped from their loving arms and sent to Baghdad in the name of “perpetual obligation” and the “fruit of their doings.”
